Going for gold
It’s drinks on the deck time... so crack open a winning spirit
Who doesn’t love a cheeky cocktail before dinner, or over nibbles while you kick back with friends? And if it’s a gold standard homegrown spirit you’re after, look no further than Lighhouse Gin.
This small-batch gin has become a firm favourite with Kiwis since its inception in 2005, and now its loyal followers have more reason than ever to clink glasses in celebration.
Lighthouse recently took out Gold at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) in London. It was awarded a Gold Medal with 95 points in the London Dry Gin category. Martinborough-made Lighthouse was one of three Kiwi gins to scoop Gold, and was described by judges as being “exceptionally balanced and beautifully rounded; a true classic with real class and elegance”.
Lighthouse Gin distiller Rachel Hall says the win can be attributed to the fact that every batch of gin has the same attention to detail, delivering the same handcrafted taste in every bottle.
And soon Lighthouse lovers will be able to see the process for themselves. The company will be opening a distillery for the public to enjoy as part of Foley Wines’ The Old Winery destination in Martinborough, with construction starting this year. The new development will feature a custom-built copper still, and visitors will be able to see small-batch gin making on site. In the spirit of national pride, of course, you might want to take a bottle or three home with you...
