THE WORLD’S EARLIEST
erotic graffiti has been discovered on the Aegean island of Astypalaia – and it’s gay. Phalluses were carved into limestone in the 6th Century, with bold inscriptions including, “Nikasitimos was here mounting Timiona.” Archaeologist Dr Vlachopoulos says, “By using the verb in the past continuous, it clearly says these two men were making love over a long period of time.” The graffiti also attests to the literacy of everyday citizens in Ancient Greece.
