THE BIG PICTURE
Sydney Mardi Gras in wide frame.
Thirty-seven years ago, gay and lesbian activists in Sydney rallied to celebrate the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, to protest against police brutality, and to call for the decriminalisation of homosexuality. It ended in a violent brawl with police, but hastened the reform process. Today, it is the biggest nighttime celebration of gay pride in the world. Last year, 10,000 participants marched up Oxford Street in over 200 different floats and marching groups.
