Unfortunately, people do legit believe that. I spoke to a woman in Christchurch who believed the earthquakes were God’s revenge for the gays and debauchery, which begs the question, why was the cathedral destroyed while the strip club nearby was unharmed? But never let the truth get in the way of a good story, I guess. – James Armstrong
