GOD’S OWN COUNTRY

Named one of the 10 best films of 2017 by Empire magazine, God’s Own Country was released last year but flew under the radar. A young Yorkshire sheep farmer, Johnny takes over the family farm due to his father’ sill-health. The film explores Johnny’s isolation on the farm, his lonely existence, binge drinking and casual sexual encounters. Johnny’s father decides help is needed and hires a Romanian migrant worker, the handsome Gheorghe. An intense romance forms between Gheorghe and Johnny, bringing unacknowledged emotions to the fore. Johnny’s dad finds out about the pair and their relationship is thrown some unexpected challenges. With an approval rating of 99 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has been described as “a quiet, moving rumination on loneliness and newfound intimacy”.
