What do you do when inspiration strikes between solo albums? Well, if you’re our beloved John Grant, the great, gay electro-pop master of our age, you create your own super-group with a bunch of synth nerds from the band Wrangler. Like JG’s solo work, this side project called Creep Show, is not easy listening. It draws inspiration from blippy ’80s electronic music and video games and arrives at the avantgarde end of art pop. That works in Mr Dynamite’s favour if you’re looking for something distinctive. It doesn’t if you’re looking for accessible pop songs to crack open the charts. Perhaps Mr Grant’s fourth solo album, due this year, might veer him back towards hitsville.
