MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN
The first movie was such a big hit – no surprise given the original ABBA jukebox musical is one of the biggest stage shows ever – so there was always a chance of double-dipping for a sequel. “More” in this case means less hits and more ABBA fan favourites, more glamour in the form of Cher, but less Meryl Streep in the form of a surprise plot twist. Hey, we’d never divulge how she comes back from the dead for a cloyingly soppy mother/daughter duet, My Love My Life, which left us sobbing mercilessly in the cinema. Biggest surprise, though, is the bonus inclusion of Meryl tackling ABBA’s melancholy swansong, The Day Before You Came, as a glorious piano and orchestra ballad. Sublime.
