DNA Magazine

2018’s most exciting record so far!

- BY MARC ANDREWS

CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS – CHRIS

To be clear here, Christine is also Chris and known to her mum by her French name,

Héloïse Letissier. We can see why she decided to change it! After garnering critics’ attention for her debut album, Chaleur Humaine,

Chris, who identifies as pansexual and

“boldly androgynous”, is taking on a gay male character for this record and is cruising for his/ her big mainstream breakthrough. “I initially set out to smash against macho culture and macho men,” Christine told DNA. “I became obsessed with this idea of the macho man and still being a woman. What does it mean if I’m this figure and I’m a woman? Does it make me an aberration? Is it joyful?” Not only does Chris deliver swaggering machismo twisted with concepts of sexuality and gender fluidity, but there’s a hefty sampling of ’80s R’n’B that might please Janet Jackson’s nasty lawyers.
