What kind of denial is cover boy Konstantin living in? “Everything is alright with LGBT life in Moscow,” he says? Really truly? Is he living in a gym-induced state of blindness? Perhaps his head is too clouded by all the fanciful operas he loves. “We have lots of gays and lesbians. We just can’t show it in public,” he says. How can LGBT people living invisible lives be alright? We have seen the footage of the police brutalising pro-LGBT protesters on the street. DNA has reported about how the Pride events have been cancelled by the city council. What about the thugs that beat up Peter Tatchell when he was there? What about the soccer hooligans who beat up that gay couple at the World Cup. I would say, things are not okay. What a pity he was not able to be honest about the situation. – M’n’M.
From the Ed: A fair point well made, M’n’M, and if Konstantin were a politician we would have press him on those replies. However, he’s a Russian citizen living a fairly open LGBT life in a country where we know this is risky. Remember, Russia is not a democracy in the sense that we understand it. Yes, there are elections, but there is no opposition. Putin controls the media, the bureaucracy and dissent and challenges to his leadership are met with imprisonment, torture and death. Opposition politicians and journalists die. We understand Konstantin’s responses. Perhaps, we need to read between the lines.
I remember Konstantin when he went by the name Kirill. To be honest, I preferred him when he was Kirill to how he is now. He’s too big for my liking but I appreciated the interview. I don’t think I ever saw “Kirill” interviewed so it was good to find out what’s going on in his life and to realise that he’s much more interesting than just being a pin-up boy. Who knew he worked in theatre and loved the opera? – Lucas P
