JUSSIE SUPPORT Popular star of the US TV show Empire, Jussie Smollett (right) receives love and support from around the world after being brutally attacked in Chicago in an apparent antiblack and anti-gay hate crime. Smollett was hospitalised after two men jumped him and put a noose around his neck in a violent attack. The men allegedly wore face masks and yelled, “Make America Great Again”. Jussie is said to be recovering well.
POLE DANCE A prominent gay Polish politician launches a new progressive, liberal party with a clear aim to stamp out right-wing hate in his country. Robert Biedron’s new Wiosna party, which translates as “Spring” pledges to brighten the gloomy and often anti-gay landscape of Polish politics.
GAY CONVERT Leading American “gay conversion therapist” David Matheson (left), who created violently anti-gay “treatments” to try to turn gay men straight under the guise of religious teaching, comes out as gay himself. Matheson says he acknowledges the harm he has caused and has quit his torturous practice. However, the programmes he designed are still in use across the US.
KILLER Canadian Bruce McArthur pleads guilty to the murder of eight men in an apparent anti-gay killing spree in Toronto. All the victims disappeared from the city’s gay village, sparking shock and anger among the LGBT+ community. McArthur, 67, was awaiting sentencing at the time of going to press.
HORROR An unnamed man is publicly executed in Iran for homosexuality. Reports state the man, 31, was hanged in a public space in the city of Kazeroon. It is alleged the man raped two 15-year-old boys.
CHOKE Hold An 18-year-old British man is accused of murder after an older gay man was choked to death during a “sex game gone wrong”. Daniel Kurmelovs admits choking Frank Lennon, 53, but insists the death was an accident. The prosecution claim he intended to kill. The case continues.
MARRIAGE ANXIETY A new study reveals the negative impact of Australia’s 2017 postal survey on marriage equality has had on the LGBT+ community. Psychologists say antigay sentiment led to increases in depression, anxiety and stress.
SUPER-GOAL Male cheerleaders are featured in America’s Super Bowl for the first time. Two men, Quinton Peron and Napoleon Jinnies (above), joined the official cheerleading efforts during the February live finals, challenging gender norms and inspiring LGBT+ kids across the world.
