SONIC RADIATION

Sonic Radiation’s music evokes a sleazy after-after-party in a club so cool you haven’t heard of it yet.

- By Marc Andrews

DNA: You must get this all the time, but are you related to Sonic The Hedgehog? Sonic Radiation: [Laughs]. No, but it’s a great game. Actually, Sonic Radiation music might be good to play with that game.

Jokes aside, you make seriously sexy, dark dance music.

Thanks! Sonic Radiation is all the things in EDM I have always liked. Early dance music was cool and dark and I loved that. It was new and had a fun spirit. I try to keep that in my music.

Your music conjures images of a sex party in Berlin. Discuss.

[Literally laughs his head off]. Bangin’ at the party. Classic!

Why take on the “Sonic Radiation” guise?

I hope the anonymity will create excitement. Are you planning to give Deadmau5’s “mouse ears” a run for his money?

Deadmau5 is great. I can only dream of being that great.

What does your mom call you at home? “Turn that down, it’s too loud!”

Any plans to get involved in movie soundtracks like Daft Punk did with Tron?

I would love that because I’m a huge sci-fi fan. The Blade Runner 2049 soundtrack by Hans Zimmer was incredible. We hear a lot of influences in your music.

I grew up loving Rush [rock act], Depeche Mode [electronica], INXS and others. They all spoken to me, musically, but EDM is the absolute best for me. It’s so different to any other genre.

The gays and EDM have a long history. Your early work with The 121 Project had a hi-NRG bent, borne in the gay clubs of the 1970s and ’80s. Do you see your music in that beautiful, on-going relationship?

I hope so. Those early styles got me hooked. The 121 Project was my first attempt at bringing my styles together. I hope everyone can escape from everything for just a little while with Sonic Radiation.

In troubled times the world likes to dance more. Agree?

If that’s true, we sure need to dance now, huh!? Are you romantically attached?

Sadly, no, but I am a hopeless romantic.

How do you define your sexuality?

I’m not sure, but it sure feels good to be close to someone I need.

So, are there many gay people in your circle of friends?

To be honest, there aren’t so many these days. The gay people I’ve known were so nice and we had fun together. I don’t have any plans to play at Gay Pride events or at Berghain in Berlin at the moment, although that would be cool. Sonic Radiation isn’t a touring entity yet. What’s your message to the world?

I’d like to say, “What’s up?” to DNA readers. I hope everyone can explore their journey through time and space and find many wonderful things to enjoy. I’ve enjoyed answering these questions.
