Alex is as comfortable behind the camera as he is in front of it. Indeed, the image on the opposite page is a self-portrait. He regularly works with a range of clients, from dancers and actors to fashion and fitness models. There is one person in particular, though, he would love to shoot. “My dream model? Chris Hemsworth. I love his energy and enthusiasm. He has a great personality and I would love to reveal it through my own photography prism,” says Alex.
Originally from Ukraine, Alex sought asylum in the United States after receiving hostility in his home country for being a member of the trans community.
I feel more socially protected as a trans person and have found the freedom of doing what I love without discrimination… I couldn’t be happier!
“My life has changed drastically since I moved here five years ago. I feel more socially protected as a trans person and have found the freedom of doing what I love without facing discrimination, especially here in California. I married the man of my dreams a month ago… I couldn’t be happier!” he says.
While he acknowledges that not every state in America offers the same levels of protection to the LGBTIQ community as his own, he is inspired by the unity he has seen as Americans come together to push for greater rights and acceptance in the face of the threats posed by the current administration.
“They fight back, they don’t stay silent. They speak up, they advocate, they resist, they take action against hate. Influencers, major cosmetics brands, fashion designers, numerous apparel brands, all working together to celebrate our community… creating spaces for all genders, all races, all ages and beyond. I am so happy that, as a community, we are strong, connected and empowered.”
Alongside his photography, Alex has also recently found a new creative passion for acting: “I fell in love with performing… now I’m working really hard to gain experience. It’s a tough craft… but I’m sure with hard work and belief in myself, nothing is impossible!”
