He sings, he body builds, looks great in heels and makes coffee, too.

DNA: Where are you from?

Sir Jet: I was born in Chicago but I’ve spent the majority of my life in Arizona, and a few years in Los Angeles. What brought you to porn?

I was debating whether porn was the right avenue for me for a couple of years, and I decided to give it a shot in an attempt to resurrect my music career by becoming the popstar of porn. Day jobs pay the bills but I longed for the funds to create music.

How did you transition from singer to porn?

I’ve been releasing music since 2007. I’ve also been a nude art model for almost 20 years, so I’m not shy when it comes to being naked. I’ve also done my fair share of escorting over the years, so I’m comfortable with strangers. I wanted to create something that hasn’t been done before, hence my new, porn-inspired album, Empowered Bottom.

Has porn helped bring attention to your singing career?

I think it will once the album is out. I haven’t released any new music since 2012, so very few fans know of me as a singer.

You’re also dedicated to fitness and body building. Has that been a long-term interest?

I’ve been a bodybuilder for about 20 years. I’m very scheduled and organised so anything that requires planning and following a routine comes easily to me. Along the fitness journey I also fell in love with the idea of getting stronger and stronger over time.

You combine physique and cross-dressing, which has become known as “muscle drag”. How did that start?

As a genderfluid individual, I’ve always loved playing dress-up. I used to collect Sailor Moon and other Japanese fashion dolls. In around 2010 I met my friend, Vicktor and through his collection of heels and such I learned that I could dress in high heels and lingerie in the same way I dressed my dolls, and so my stage persona was born. In the beginning I got a lot of criticism for the transformation because most people fear change, but thanks to shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race, being genderfluid and gender ambiguous are a lot more acceptable these days.

What’s the most common assumption people make about you?

That I live a life of luxury in Los Angeles. I actually live in Arizona and work full-time at a coffee kiosk in a grocery store.

Your name has changed a few times throughout your career; why?

My initials are JET – Joel Evan Tye. My original stage name was Jet Kanashi, kanashi being Japanese for sadness. I studied Japanese my whole teenage life, and most of my songs are about depression. People had trouble pronouncing the name, so I changed to my real name, Joel Evan for a while. But I wasn’t really feeling it. It was my manager, in 2010, who suggested Sir Jet

because I’m like everyone’s knight in shining armour.

How do you feel indie porn sites have affected mainstream porn companies and do you feel it has brought a new crop of performers into the mainstream?

I haven’t really paid attention. As an entertainer, I love doing studio porn, especially ones with storylines. If homemade porn takes over the business I probably won’t find much interest in it anymore. I’m impressed and inspired by the models who have made careers out of it, though. I’ll also say I don’t feel gay porn is mainstream. All the studios I’ve worked with have been good – a little disorganised but they’ve always been easy, fun experiences. When filming a scene, how important is mutual attraction between the performers? Honey, if you bring me candy, laugh at my jokes, and eat my ass you can look however you want to when we film. Appearance doesn’t matter to me; it’s how you make me feel.

Do you get to travel a lot working in porn? Honestly, no. I’m quite possibly one of the least used models in the industry, despite my good looks and availability. I’ve been booked less than ten times in the two years I’ve been in the business. I’d love to do more. I seem to be popular online but for some reason the people casting porn don’t see that.

You have a huge social media following. Do you think you effect gay culture positively?

I hope so. I try to promote an “each to his/her own” philosophy on life. I hope I inspire people to explore and indulge in that which they find joy in. Just play dress-up, I say, and you can show the whole world or keep it all to yourself. But always allow yourself to find joy.

Do you think sex work will ever be decriminalized in the USA?

If the government can find a way to tax it, anything can be made legal. At the end of the day it is about profit, not morality. It’ll make doing taxes easier if it’s legal!

There’s still a lot of negative stigma associated with escorting and porn work. Why does that remain so?

It takes time and effort to educate people. It’s basically showing sex workers in a “they’re just like you and me” sort of scenario on TV enough times, then people will understand.

How do you maintain balance and personal relationships outside of your adult work?

I’ve done so little adult work that it doesn’t really come into play in my day-to-day life. I tend to spend most of my free time alone. I don’t have any relationships it would affect. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I dream of owning my own home, and being able to create the music and videos I see in my mind’s eye.

What are your basic stats?

I’m 37, 175cm [5’9”], 77kg [170lbs] and six inches cut.
