CAN WATCHING PORN BE BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

- DNA READERS HAVE THEIR SAY...

The only bad thing porn does is give you the unrealistic

expectation that your pizza will arrive on time.

Texas legislators think so, and raised the prospect of legislation banning porn in their state. Were our parents right? Is porn bad for us? We put the question to DNA’s Instagram followers. Here’s what they had to say…

Check the Texas legislators’ personal computers; they aren’t watching it for research. – TomCullisPhoto

Texas legislators think purchasing semiautomatic weapons at Walmart and having open carry is good for your health, so… – cerealgeek

For a party that claims to be the party of freedom and liberty, the Republicans sure seem to want to legislate the fuck out of our personal lives – mrchristianwells

Liberty and freedom [is what they say], but everything they do is the opposite: banning books, banning drag shows, but free to buy assault weapons. – jaysuherwanto

The American Republican Party don’t think porn is healthy because they want us all to be as miserable as they are. Not going to happen. Whatever happened to live and let live? People need to butt the hell out of other people’s private lives and worry about the person in the mirror. – BobbyXanadu

Texas legislators? I’ll take my health advice from someone else thanks. – thehorrorscope

That’s a complex question. But for the most part, yes. I’m all up for sex-positive experiences, but if porn is used as a coping mechanism, an avoidance of intimacy, or as an addiction it can be devastating.

Not to mention that some of the porn stars are sex addicts themselves and for a lot of them it has damaging long-term effects on their mental health and sense of self-esteem.

Russia recently banned Porn Hub, telling its people “to go out and meet real people”. Porn does not teach you about how to connect with real people.

At the end of the day, everyone has their own relationship with porn, but if it’s interfering with your intimate relationship or real life then that’s a problem.

I feel it does more harm than good on many levels. – johnniecass

The people in Texas who are saying this are not gay, and I think for gay men it’s different.

I lived through the HIV holocaust. I watched two-thirds of my friends die, including all but two former boyfriends. Virtually everybody I wanted to date was dead by 1990.

I spent a lot of years playing with myself and watching porn, and it’s still easier than going out and doing the dating nightmare, especially at my age.

I think it’s my business and not anybody else’s, but I am very glad that there are goodlooking men who dedicate their lives to producing content that brings some happiness to those of us who have not lived the storybook life that, I guess, all these people in Texas think they live. They can go f- themselves! – ed_garren

With so many other issues that Texas needs to address, legislators there are concerned about the effects of porn? Just another reason why I would never consider moving to or visiting that state! – keith_b100

If it’s just used to bust a nut now and then there’s nothing wrong with it. – alterfledermaus

Porn, in some instances, can be dangerous by relaxing of boundaries. Long-term, this gives a very skewed view of what is normal during intimacy. Is using implements acceptable? Is male rape acceptable? Is the idea of group rape acceptable when portrayed as the norm? The boundaries are fuzzy, and that is dangerous. – fordpaulwilliam
