RSL pool’s roof investigation, but gym still open

- Comment by YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY

THERE’S frustration for management and users of the RSL Pool at the moment after it was closed over concerns about structural movement in the roof above it.

There’s genuine heartache from management and staff at the award-winning health club that the pool’s closure is affecting over 2000 people who use it on a regular basis.

“There’s nothing wrong with the pool and the roof isn’t going to fall in or anything like that,” RSL Health Club manager Carmen Appleby told Dubbo Photo News. “The concern is a piece might fall off as a result of the movement, or if windows come lose they might fall, that’s the danger. The pool is being kept in top condition, so when we get the word all is okay, then we’re ready to immediately start trading again.”

For now, it’s a waiting game while engineers decide the best solution, however the gym and fitness rooms are unaffected and open as usual.

March is Seniors Month at the health club and, at any given time, there might be 50 seniors in the pool during aqua aerobics sessions.

“We’ve introduced some new activities to keep the seniors moving until they can get back in the pool. We are running some activities at the Dubbo Aquatic Centre, but it’ll be closing in five weeks or so, and our seniors do need their exercise,” Carmen said.

SPEAKING of Lovin’ Local... if you’ve ever had the pleasure of attending one of the regular fundraisers hosted by Ingenia Gardens aged care facility on Wheelers Lane, where it appears Masterchefs go to retire, then save the date for their Tradies’ Breakfast on Saturday, March 24, from 8am to 11am.

There’ll be $2 sausage or bacon and egg rolls, Devonshire Teas, plus cake and brica-brac stalls, raffles and a special guest, actor Sam Webb, who is also a CO-CEO of LIVIN, an organisation creating mental health awareness.

The Tradies Breakfast in Dubbo is being held in memory of Perry Meredith.

IT’S a well-known fact that the arts – either creating it or appreciating it – is great for your health and wellbeing. Next Monday night, March 12, film maker, writer and lecturer Christopher Bradley is heading to Dubbo from the UK. Besides being a BBC documentary maker, photographer, travel and guide book writer, he also leads cultural tours to far off places like Uzbekistan and Iran. He’ll be presenting his travel photos on a theme that unifies the world – just about every country has an art deco cinema.

IF you’d rather be doing some creating, drop into the Central West Makers Place on Fridays from 1pm to 6pm where you can tinker with the eworkshop to do 3D printing, remote control equipment, mini-computer

programing, CNC cutting, soldering and programming or use wood and metal working equipment, lapidary or the music rooms.

If saving lives is more your thing, drop into the Dubbo Photo News office to purchase a copy of Donna Falconer’s book “My Time”, and join her petition to Federal Parliament to subsidise new breast cancer treatment drugs which currently cost $5000 a month to buy.

Also, get along to 54 Grangewood Drive on Saturday, March 10, to the Inner Wheel Club of Dubbo’s major fundraiser for Cord Blood Research – a monster garage sale from 8am to midday.

If you have quality books to donate to the garage sale, please drop these into Dubbo Photo News by 4pm, Friday, March 9. Nothing damaged please.
