SIMONE GROUNDS and Darrell Wheeler were named Champion of Champions – the most successful in their respective divisions – at the Cycling Australia Masters Track Championships in Melbourne last weekend.

Simone and Darrell led a six-person assault on the medals with the Dubbo Cycle Club (DCC) adding another swag to the coffers.

Jason Farr, Tim Hines, Heather Ticehurst and Jennifer Raines contested the four-day event with Simone and Darrell, competing with the best from all states and territories

“Simone was the dominant rider in the WMAS3 division, taking gold in the scratch race, points race and 2000m individual pursuit and a second placing in the 500m individual time trial,” according to DCC Publicity Officer Sam Fitzgerald.

“World Champion Darrell took gold in the MMAS9 the scratch race as well as turning in a creditable performance in the gruelling points race, while Jennifer Raines came fourth in the WMAS1 points race.

“Tim Hines also backed up his State titles successes, competing against Jase in the MMAS3. He was finished second in the scratch race, third in the sprint and the 3000m individual pursuit races, fourth in the 750m individual time trial Standing, Tim Hines, Jennifer Raines, Darrell Wheeler, Simone Grounds, Jason Farr, Heather Ticehurst, seated, Gus Dawson, Raymond Wheeler. and fifth in the points race,” Sam added.

Perhaps the most pleasing results from a club perspective came when the Dubbo “tornadoes” Jennifer, Simone and Heather qualified fastest in the Women’s All Age 2000m team pursuit and qualified in an Australian record time of 2 minutes 37.561 seconds.

The trio obliterated that time in the gold medal ride off, taking over three seconds off their record to down the University of Brunswick team.

Simone and Heather then combined for the All Age 500m Team Sprint event where they overcame a second-seeding to take the National title, 0.07 seconds ahead of the University of Queensland pair.
