Rachel joins Miss Universe Australia for second year
AFTER making it to the State Finals in the 2017 Miss Universe Australia competition, Dubbo model Rachel Wykes is again throwing her hat in the ring this year for another shot at success, and she’s hoping to help out those less fortunate on her way.
Ms Wykes, 20, who you may recognise from working at the Commercial Hotel or on posters for Elle & Vee Boutique at the Riverdale Shopping Centre, has recently moved to Sydney to pursue personal and professional opportunities, including the pageant.
“I am studying a Bachelor of Business majoring in Public Relations and Communications, working full-time in hospitality, and also modelling which involves weekly photoshoots,” Rachel told Dubbo Photo News.
“While juggling a big move away from family and friends and a new busy lifestyle, I have also taken on the amazing opportunity to join the Miss Universe Australia family again for the second year in a row.”
A Miss Universe Australia pageant is held each year to select a young woman to represent Australia at the International Miss Universe pageant. The Australian winner also receives a $10,000 grant to use towards study or starting a business.
In their capacity as pageant representatives, contestants are encouraged to raise awareness of issues close to their heart. This year Rachel has again chosen to support Toybox International Australia, a charity that aims to raise funds and awareness to assist sick and disadvantaged children.
Working in conjunction with other charities such as The Centre for Cerebral Palsy, Camp Quality, Variety and the Leukaemia Foundation, Toybox purchases the vital equipment and therapy needed to conquer the challenges that life has brought to sick children and their families.
“Having the opportunity to support this charity warms my heart, as being a country kid I understand the struggles of access to medical support and services,” Rachel said.
She’s hoping to beat her total amount raised of $1500 from last year and is keen to return to Dubbo soon to do some fundraising in person.
“I hope to gain support from businesses, local families and anyone in the position to help this amazing charity to improve the quality of life for Australian children. Even if it’s just $5, you will be helping me get closer to keeping the toybox full.”
The competition will be held in Sydney over April 20-21 where Rachel will be competing against up to 35 others in order to claim a spot in the national round.
