Lining up for the Vintage Fair

- By NATALIE HOLMES

OFFERING low cost groceries and crisis food packs to vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the community is all in a day’s work for the team at Wellington’s Baptistcare Community Centre.

“Baptistcare’s food support program is designed to assist families on low incomes with affordable groceries,” supervisor Jenni Walker explained.

“It’s a place where families or individuals can come in to the shop and buy low-cost groceries, plus get fresh fruit, vegetables and bread for free as it’s available.

“It’s important that people have access to low cost food, and that no one goes hungry unnecessarily. There is help available if people are struggling to make ends meet, and to be able to afford food.”

Described as a “community of people who respect one another’s individuality, and who value the support and friendship that comes from an improved quality of life”, Baptistcare also works in conjunction with other organisations to offer assistance and referrals to people in the community.

“Baptistcare values the generous support of the local businesses and donations from them, and we are also supported by Food Bank in our provision of low-cost groceries to the community,” Jenni explained.

“We also enjoy getting free vegetables from our local men’s shed at times, as well as our community growers, when people have a lot of extra vegetables or fruit. It’s wonderful seeing how the community supports each other, through Baptistcare’s Community Centre.”

Jenni says the door is always open to those who may just need to see a friendly face.

“It’s amazing how many people who come from here or nearby towns to visit the shop – even if it’s just for a cuppa and a chat. The community centre is a safe and welcoming place, and everyone is truly welcome.”

We also offer morning tea and our community centre is child-friendly,” Jenni said.

Since its inception in 1944, Baptistcare has grown into one of the largest and most trusted providers of aged care and community support services in NSW and the ACT.

Wellington’s Baptistcare is located at 77 Swift St and open from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Call them on 6845 3779 if you require assistance.
