Vale Dawn Walsh

DAWN WALSH, the lady featured in Dubbo Photo News last week as she attended a musical concert in her honour, passed away on Friday, June 1, at Lourdes.

Dawn was a much-loved singing teacher at Macquarie Conservatorium and former professional singer for almost 40 years with Opera Australia.

“Dawn was a treasured member of the teaching staff of Macquarie Conservatorium,” Conservatorium director Vivienne Winther said.

“Dubbo was very fortunate that she chose to come here on her retirement from the professional operatic stage to take up teaching. To have an artist of her calibre teaching here was an amazing opportunity that opened up the world of professional singing to her students.”

A private family funeral was held in Cowra. A memorial service in Dubbo for Dawn Walsh is being organised.

Vale Dr Geoff Jackel

A RESPECTED Dubbo surgeon of 37 years, Dr Geoff Jackel, passed away on May 31 in Newcastle. He retired from practice in Dubbo in 2011 and there would be thousands of people in town today who he helped bring into the world.

Dr Jackel is another who contributed immeasurably to our community in lasting ways.

Preston the motivator

THIS week, a dear friend of mine has brought a dear friend of hers to town – all the way from Los Angeles – and it is our city’s students who have been duly rewarded with time spent with motivational speaker Preston Pollard. His message is all for helping young people develop resilience and coping skills.

Preston is joining locals Nathan Shooter, Kerrie Phipps and Andrew Basset for the Personal Brand Summit tonight (Thursday, June 7) at the Black Box Theatre, Western Plains Cultural Centre, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm plus Q&A time. Tomorrow afternoon (Friday, June 8) Preston will be meeting kids at the skate park.

See today’s Dubbo Weekender section of this paper for our profile on Preston.

Have your say on 2040

FRIDAY is also the deadline to get your submissions in to Dubbo Regional Council and have your say on the 2040 Community Strategy Plan and future budgets. If you don’t have access to internet or a computer, drop into council and they can set you up.

Development in the air

SOMETHING’S underway at Oliver House in Church Street with a number of tenants given four weeks to vacate. Property managers Bob Berry Real Estate say there’s nothing to report but given the huge amount of development pegged for the CBD, nothing would surprise us.

Another sketch of a new business centre has been doing the rounds on social media, showing a very modern looking business building designed by Surry Hills firm Vanovac Tuon Architects for a Macquarie Street development which apparently will be a $20 million retail and business precinct.

You win some, you lose some

JETGO’S news this week of entering voluntary administration in the face of legal action by Dubbo Regional Council has put passengers into disarray.

One friend flew to Brisbane on Jetgo and while away the news broke and she had to buy a new ticket home on Qantas. The hotline number to call is 1300 659 116 for anyone in a holding pattern over what to do.

Administrators Mcleod & Partners have also suggested customers left in the lurch should contact their credit card provider to consider options with respect to a refund of your ticket purchase.

Sadly, there are no winners really in this scenario and Dubbo has lost out on two fantastic air routes to Brisbane and Melbourne.

Psychic medium in Dubbo soon

DEB WEBBER is coming to town. Star of Award winning TV show “Sensing Murder” and a columnist of nine years with “Woman’s Day”, Deb is a psychic medium who has the “ability to connect with deceased love ones”.

She’ll be on stage at the Dubbo Golf Club on Thursday, June 14. Doors open 7pm, show starts at 7.30. See more information on her advertisement inside.

Win tickets to The Australian Dance Theatre

THE Australian Dance Theatre is returning to Dubbo Regional Theatre on Thursday, June 21, and we have tickets to giveaway to their jaw-dropping show, “The Beginning of Nature”.

Performed with two vocalists on stage, who sing in the Kaurna language, the first language of the Adelaide Plains (the home to Australian Dance Theatre), the performance sounds like a lasting experience.

How to win? Send a selfie to the Dubbo Photo News facebook page WITH you holding a copy of Dubbo Photo News. Be creative. See our ad inside for more details.
