ABC radio highlights positive impacts of sport in Wellington

-

ABC reporter Jen Browning spent some time in Wellington last week.

Jen wanted to see for herself the impact a combined effort built around the Wellington Cowboys Rugby League Club was having on the entire community.

She left very impressed. Club President Darren Ah See, one of the greats of the club’s premiership-winning teams of the ‘90s, and the Wellington Aboriginal Health Service are working with local police and concerned community individuals and groups to try and turn around the town’s well-documented issues with drugs and alcohol.

It is well worth taking a look on ABC iview report, or just type Wellington Cowboys into your search engine.

One of the Cowboys’ favourite players, Richard Peckham, very honestly recaps his story about the influence both rugby league and good people have had in helping get him back on track.

It is a heart-warming story of a community working together. Like all journeys there is a long way to go and plenty of twists and turns, but hats off to Darren and coach Aiden Ryan on your dedication.

The people from the beautiful town nestled into the hills between the Macquarie and Bell Rivers are pretty pumped about their revitalised football teams and the pristine re-laid turf on Kennard Park!

The Cowboys had everyone on their feet last Sunday as they ran in plenty of tries to down Narromine.
