Cricketers on tour

Local cricketers Ben Patterson and Brock Larance (pictured above) are in England following their late callups for the Aboriginal Tour retracing the original Australian team 150 years ago.

They are joined by Wellington players Sally Moylan and Sara Darney as well as Roxanne Van Veen from Lithgow for a month-long tour.

Each player has been given one of the “Originals” to research and share with others.

“Patto”, who is on his third tour of the home of cricket and scored a stack of runs in Dubbo this season, is hoping he can do better in England than his Original. The man known as Sundown only scored one run in his entire career and returned early suffering with tuberculosis.

CYMS in State final

Group XI Premiers Dubbo CYMS are hoping to repeat the feat of the 1974 Western Division Amco Cup winning team when they tackle Guildford Owls in the NSWRL Premiers’ Trophy Final at the end of the month.

There are some interesting synergies – both CYMS and Western Division wear green and white; both are seen as “bushies” against the might of Sydney; both underdogs.

Don’t tell coach Tim Ryan and his boys!

Harness Racing

The Batten family from Gilgandra are still celebrating their win at Bathurst last week. Barry and Lorraine and their son Geoff have bred, own and train Barlor Troubadour, who took the 2260m race with legendary Bathurst driver Steve Turnbull in the seat.

Barlor Troubadour is the only harness racing horse in Gilgandra!

The team backed up to take Heat 1 of the Peak Hill Agriwest last Sunday. This time it was Nathan Turnbull in the gig.

The Peak Hill Carnival of Cups is coming up this Sunday featuring many Dubbo drivers and trainers like Peter Gavin, and Willie Stubbs and young Tom Pay hoping to convert Heat form into Finals glory!
