THREE of Dubbo’s budding athletics stars will soon be heading to Canada as part of an organised track and field tour.

About 60 students from Australia have been selected to train and compete at two State Carnivals in Canada, which are equivalent to the All Schools or Combined Catholic Colleges school-based meets in NSW.

Brooke Galley, Maya Piras and Millie Gooch all attend St Johns College and their results that gained them entry into the tour were taken from the All School’s Carnival in October last year.

The three girls are regulars at Friday night Little Athletics in Dubbo and at Little Athletics Carnivals, although the October to March season has ended now. Their School Carnival is coming up, so that will be a good opportunity to bring them up to peak performance before the tour commences.

Brooke will compete in the 200m, 400m, 800m and long jump; Maya in the 100m, 100m hurdles, 200m, long jump and 4x100m relay; and Millie in the 100m, 200m, long jump, high jump, triple jump and 4x100m relay.

The three girls and Millie’s mum Michelle Gooch will leave Australia on Wednesday, June 27. The athletes will be given time to acclimatise and take part in various training sessions before the two competitions held in Kelowna and Vancouver.

There will also be time for sightseeing, including white water rafting, a tour of Whistler Mountain, and south of the Canada-us border they’ll visit Hollywood Boulevard, Universal Studios, Disneyland, California Adventure, Los Angeles, Santa Monica Pier and do some shopping along the way.

They are set to arrive back in Australia on Sunday, July 15.

To help with the costs, they are going to be doing a fundraising drive. Their first donation was received from Dubbo Regional Council in the form of “I Love Dubbo” T-shirts.

“With Council donating we hope it will encourage others. We will go cold canvassing and get the girls to go to local businesses, with their T-shirts of course!” Michelle told Dubbo Photo News.

Best of luck to these three athletics stars from Dubbo!
