Summer’s best reads

- By NATALIE HOLMES

MONEY and food have been at the top of mind for buyers at The Book Connection, with Scott Pape’s The Barefoot Investor one of the biggest sellers of the Christmas season.

“Over Christmas, The Barefoot Investor has been a very, very good seller and has continued to do so,” sales manager Rae Craft said.

“People are interested in taking control of their money.”

Scott Pape’s follow-up book, The Barefoot Investor for Families, has also been popular.

“It is specifically aimed at instilling these practices into children, teaching them about saving and the value of money.”

Mrs Craft said these books are easily digested by readers as they are not written in economic language.

“They are easy to read and follow,” she explained.

Children’s cooking has also been prevalent in terms of book selection.

“Another thing we have had asked for over and over are cookbooks for kids which are big sellers.

“There is a big demand for books on kids cooking, maybe because of the (SBS) Food Network, maybe more kids are cooking.”

The Australian Women’s Weekly Kids’ Cookbook and the Complete Children’s Cookbook by Dorling Kindersely are both good sellers in this regard.

Mrs Craft said Australian books had also been selling well.

“In fiction, we have some really good Australian authors, with good sales.”

Authors such as Liane Moriarty, Di Morrissey and Thomas Keneally continue to rate among readers along with television tie-ins such as Diana Gabaldon’s The Outlander and Secret City by Chris Uhlmann and books by journalists such as Any Ordinary Day by Leigh Sales.

Mrs Craft said picture books were also popular purchases, particularly with grandparents.
