CHURCHILL & ORWELL
by Thomas Ricks, “Subtitled The Fight for Freedom” the Pulitzer Prize winning title is a dual biography of the two key minds of the 20th century. Both came close to death in the mid1930s – Orwell shot in the neck on the trenches in the Spanish Civil War. Churchill was struck by a car in New York City. At the time neither had been seen as major personalities. Yet both
Churchill and Orwell had the foresight to see clearly that the issue was human freedom, that the challenges of the totalitarian menace of Communism and Facism would deny us basic freedoms and had to be resisted.

NANCY WAKE

Her idyllic lifestyle was ended by World War II. Through her work with the escape route network she helped a thousand Allied POWS and downed airmen reach safety, yet she had to escape from the French herself to avoid capture by the Germans – she had risen to the top of their most wanted list. In London she trained with the Special Operations Executive as a secret agent and saboteur before parachuting back to France, working with the French Resistance.
