A community collaboration for mothers and carers of students

- By TIJANA BIRDJAN

AS a way to commemorate and celebrate the motherly figures in students’ lives, Dubbo South Public School held a Mother’s Day stall recently, collaborating with the local Aboriginal Women’s elder group to produce items and have them ready for purchase at the stall.

Group member, Janet Toomey, shared that the group handcrafted small gifts for the children to take home.

“This is our first time holding a stall at the school, and hopefully we’re back again for Father’s Day,” she added, saying the stall has been a success for both the school and the women’s group.

“We love helping out, and it’s nice to see the children choosing gifts,” said Ms Toomey, whose grandchild is also a student at the school.

Acting Principal, Tim Cassell, said the stalls have been a success every year and is grateful for the involvement of the Aboriginal Women’s

elder group.

“It’s a special day where children can purchase something and give to their mother, career, aunty or grandmother, or whoever is caring for them at the time,” he continued saying the P&C community has arranged that should children be unable purchase a gift, they are still welcome to select a gift.

“It’s really important that we always work with our community members and have them involved in whatever way they can be,” he added, saying it is a great opportunity for the students to see the faces behind the communal support.

“We build connections through community events like this, and we enjoy each other’s company and get to know one another better,” he said, adding that the stall would not be as successful without the community participation.

Mr Cassell told Dubbo Photo News students can take away their learning from the classroom and apply those values to the new faces they meet.
