&DUV DQG &RƔHH D Triumph for Dubbo

- By JOHN RYAN

Denise Coles loves her husband’s 1971 Triumph but it’s not just about the car itself – she enjoys the socialising which goes with catching up with like-minded people.

When Dubbo Photo News caught up with her, she was relaxing on a camp chair having a chat to fellow car enthusiast and good friend, Pamela Carter. “I think Cars and Coffee is great because everybody gets to see the cars, whether they’re newer classics or ancient or whatever and it’s really entertaining,” Mrs Coles said, explaining people can wander around or just stay near their own car, with no pressure either way.

“Yes, that’s me, I don’t wander around anymore, I just like sitting here and taking in the atmosphere and speaking to friends.”

She said she loves people wandering up to check out the Triumph and said it’s as easy to talk to those she’s never seen as it is with people she’s known for years.

“I do, just having a chat, it’s really lovely.”

Until Cars and Coffee became a thing, she said no one realised just how important the car scene was in Dubbo.

“I think this event brings a lot of people together and it’s friendly, because people stop and they ask you about your cars and they ask you about things, they want to know all about it, what you’re doing with it – it’s definitely a real Triumph for Dubbo, it brings so many people together.”

Pamela Carter drove her red MGB to Cars and Coffee, parked it up and then wandered down to sit and chat with her mate Denise.

“It’s really surprising to know how many cars people have tucked away in their sheds and garages,” she told Dubbo Photo News, pointing out that the shared interest in mechanical iron was a powerful form of social glue,” she said. “Everyone talks to each other, it’s like the world should be in daily life, you find people here who can help you out with parts for you vehicle just by talking to someone who might know someone else, or you can find someone with specialist knowledge for your brand of car if you need advice or anything like that.”

She says sitting down and having a yarn really is a relaxing highlight of her month. “Yes, I really enjoy coming down, getting the car out and coming down and catching up with Denise and other members of The Dubbo Antique Automobile Club.”
