A TEAM environment is what inspires Morley taekwondo star and recently-crowned under-15 world champion Sonya Peric-Ratten to push towards her goals.

The 14-year-old Chisholm Catholic College Year 9 student competed in the Junior World Championships in England from July 21 to 22 for the first time.

The world championship win comes after several national and state championship gold medals.

Peric-Ratten, an ATI Martial Arts Malaga member, said she started the sport when she was seven years old.

“I did not want to do it at the start,” she said.

“Dad was doing it so he was like, ‘come along’, so I was like, ‘OK’ and I started to like it more and more.

“I just love the community and everyone there, who are so nice.

“Just thinking about the team and how everyone else keeps on going, even if they have not won; they are my inspiration.”

Her short-term goal is maintain her fitness and win more world championships, while her longterm goal is to compete at the Olympic Games.
