Retailer wastes no time with expansion

MUNDARING’s awardwinning retailer Wasteless Pantry is expanding into Bassendean and Greenwood in September.

The retailer provides bulk groceries, whole foods, liquids, personal hygiene and cleaning products for people to refill in their own reusable containers and bags. It also offers eco-friendly reusable containers, produce bags, paper bags and other products that support the zero waste ideals of refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot.

Since opening up their first store, co-owners Amanda Welschbillig and Jeannie Richardson won the Mundaring Chamber of Commerce New Business of the Year Award and Overall Business of the Year awards in 2015 and the Waste Champion title at the Waste Authority Infinity Awards 2017.

Ms Welschbillig said the store in Bassendean shopping centre was expected to open on September 14, while the Greenwood store would open by late September.

“We just opened a little store – we hoped that it would not die – and that was about the extent of it,” she said.

“We had no idea that there was so much of a following in the community and it has grown since we started, which is really exciting.”

Ms Welschbillig said when they posted the possibility of expanding, there was a lot of support from the Bassendean and Greenwood communities.

“I guess so many people just keep on coming back to us saying this is making a difference in their lives,” she said.

“It is really about getting whatever you would normally get without a packet.

“Regular people that probably weren’t thinking about this at all 12 months ago are well and truly on board now and are at least aware of what the idea (of zero waste) is, even if they have not actioned it.”
