Bigger game plan
SWAN Districts player Brooke Blurton (23) won the hearts of Australian viewers after her stint on The Bachelor. Following her exit on the show, she is now focusing on her work as a youth worker and sport.
SHE might have been the one that got away from Nick Cummins’ controversial series of The Bachelor, but for Swan Districts player Brooke Blurton, it’s a case of moving on and focusing on the things she loves most.
The 23-year-old, who was the favourite to win the ‘Honey Badger’s’ heart, walked away from the show after Cummins was unable to show his commitment to her.
It was a move that won the respect of fans across the country as she became Australia’s sweetheart.
“I’ve definitely been lucky to come out of this with such a good response from all around Australia,” she said.
“It’s obviously really nice because you are who you are and I think people have liked that.”
Blurton, who lost her mum to suicide, works as a youth worker with a focus on mental health, a role she described as her passion.
“My job is awesome,” she said. “I love it and if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.
“I’m a role model or a mentor for young girls and boys as well, especially being Aboriginal.
“There is a bit of pressure with my job in that I have to maintain a really positive outlook on life.
“And that’s what I’m trying to encourage in Aboriginal youth. You go through some stuff but you can be a role model for other youth that are coming through, which is what I’ve tried to implement myself.”
She has played sport for most of her life, including women’s footy with the Swan Districts Football Club, rugby league for South Perth and union for Nedlands, and described herself as “pretty normal”.
“It’s actually off season for footy, but at the moment I’m still doing a bit of rugby so that’s good,” she said.
“My life has been welldocumented and people who know me know I’m really normal.
“I’m actually really outgoing and a loving person and while my life hasn’t exactly been that stable, I’ve worked really hard to get where I am now.
“I have a few goals that I’d love to achieve and that’s generally going back to study and educate myself.
“I want to try not to be just an advocate anymore, but to be in the position to actually make an influence.”
So why choose a reality television show to find love, and is she still single?
“I’m different; I know what I need and it hasn’t been that easy trying to find that,” she said.
“It was also about putting myself out there and being vulnerable in situations.”
