CAMPFIRE FRENCH TOAST

-

(Without flipping) The advantage of French toast: you don’t have to supervise while you’re cooking, the campfire does the hard work for you. So you can just huddle up by the fire with a cup of coffee and patiently wait.

INGREDIENTS SERVES 4

½ loaf of white bread

4 fresh eggs

200 ml milk

1 tbsp cinnamon

Pinch of salt

1 punnet of strawberries, sliced 1 tbsp chopped almonds

Icing sugar (powdered sugar) Maple syrup

METHOD

1. Make a good fire and put a grill on top.

2. Slice the bread loaf into thick 1 cm (½ inch) slices.

3. Wrap the bottom and half of the loaf in aluminium foil in the

shape of a bowl.

4. Make sure nothing can leak from the bottom and the sides. 5. Beat the eggs, milk, cinnamon and salt, and pour the mixture

over the entire loaf so it’s evenly covered.

6. Add half of the strawberries and almonds between the slices of

bread. Keep the rest for garnishing.

7. Place the loaf above the fire for approximately 40 minutes (make sure the fire isn’t too hot, the wood should be glowing at this point). The bread is ready when it has absorbed all of the moisture.

8. Remove bread from the fire. Add the remainder of the strawberries and almonds, and top with maple syrup and icing sugar (powdered sugar).
