Beyond Blue is indebted to the work of many scientists, but in particular Dr Samantha Joye, who studies the ways in which creatures communicate at many different scales, from microbes to whales, and Dr David Gruber, who examines how species such as sharks and turtles perceive. Joye’s research has helped E-Line develop a “systematic” understanding of the ocean ecosystem, while Gruber’s recent work on sperm whales has furnished the game with something like a star creature. “We picked them for the same reasons he did, which is that we don’t know a lot about them, but they have the biggest brain on the planet and a very rich social and cultural life,” Michael Angst explains.
