Guilty party

No golden-age murder mystery is complete without a lounge of suspects and a showboating detective, and Ito agrees that “it’s really fun to write these scenes”. In The Centennial Case confrontations revolve around using a process of elimination and lateral thinking to narrow down the group, before going head-to-head with a killer while they poke holes in your reasoning. But for Ito the real art lies in ensnaring killers in verbal traps. “Holmes, Poirot and Kogoro Akechi will annoy their suspect with topics that seem to be completely unrelated at first – until you look back, and you realise that their deduction has been absolutely elegant, with not a single word wasted. My goal is to create a game where you can experience that kind of enjoyment for yourself.”
