Beating the Wii game to market, De Blob’s iOS incarnation was a top-down scrolling paintathon more akin to the original demo than the console version, with Blob controlled by either tapping the screen or tilting your phone. It was developed by a separate team – Universomo, a Finnish studio closed by THQ in 2010. The Colour Underground characters are nowhere to be seen, but there are mechanics not included elsewhere: you might need to use water to shrink to fit through tight spaces, or grow to break barriers. It remains a fascinating artefact from this experimental time in mobile gaming and a monument to THQ’s ambitions for the series – but one that, between the publisher’s closure and over a decade’s worth of iOS updates, is now inaccessible via the App Store.
