In Mechanic Town, the wrench is mightier than the sword. It’s certainly more versatile in this Zelda-adjacent top-down action adventure, which takes place after an impact winter has forced humanity underground. That would explain why you can’t see too far, forcing you to navigate using a hand-cranked lantern, with Playdate’s side-mounted widget also used to strike huge cogs (and enemies) with a spin attack. Limiting the visible playspace on a console that already requires good lighting to enjoy it may seem suboptimal, but otherwise this is a lo-fi charmer that makes clever use of its handyman hero’s growing toolkit.
