do the monster mash-up
After encountering this season’s love of all things furry, don’t be surprised if you’re checking under your bed
Designers employ scare tactics for AW16-17.
Front row at the shows has seen its share of entertaining characters. Audacious outfits, elaborate up-dos, hot-list celebrity faces: barely an eyelash is batted. So when every head in the house was turned towards giant, furry VIP guests Piro-chan and Bug-kun at Fendi’s AW16-17 show, we knew we were witnessing what industry insiders would refer to as “a moment” (not least because they took up two seats each – the nerve!).
Measuring 198cm tall, the logo-stamped “Fendirumi” brand mascots are a souped-up, selfie-loving version of the iconic Italian label’s bag charms, the craze for which reached fever pitch on the streets this season. But the scary-chic didn’t end in Milan. In Paris, it was a case of the cast of Monsters University gone on tour. Mike, Sulley, Squishy, Terri and Terry Perry – the gang were all there. In actuality, they were some of fashion’s favourite real-life characters wearing gargantuan outerwear, shaggy textures and fabulously garish hues.
From Michelin Man puffas to menacing platform shoes, proportions are only getting bigger and badder, with designs by the likes of stalwart Comme des Garçons and newcomer Vetements pushing the limits. The buy in? Choose just one enormous faux fur coat or way-out accessory that you’ll team with denim and sleep easy knowing there’s a monster in your cupboard.
