SO FRESH AND SO GREEN
It’s time to clean up your cleaning products
The products you need to purge from your beauty cabinet.
“AUSTRALIA IS FULL OF POTENT AND DISTINCTIVE FLORA WITH ANTIBACTERIAL AND CLEANSING PROPERTIES”
YOU’D NEVER SABOTAGE a training program with a heavy smoking habit, right? But there’s a surprise offender that could be just as detrimental to your workouts (and health). The everyday cleaning products tucked under your sink can have the same suffocating effects on lung function.
A study recently published in the American Journal Of Respiratory And Critical Care Medicine links toxic cleaning products to a greater risk of developing breathing and lung problems. Over 20 years of research proved that, in the long run, consistent exposure to cleaning chemicals is likely to cause significant damage to lungs — equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes a day. Even if you only break out the toilet cleaner once a fortnight, wouldn’t you rather use something that doesn’t require you to hold your breath?
“I was determined to find safe, affordable, toxic-free cleaning products that smelt fabulous and worked,” says Jessica Bragdon, co-founder of Koala Eco. Working with her husband, Bragdon harnessed the power of native plant ingredients to create a line-up of effective products that are 100 per cent biodegradable and eco-friendly.
“Australia is full of potent and distinctive flora not found anywhere else in the world, and in many cases the essential oils we source have been part of the Aboriginal pharmacopoeia for thousands of years,” she says. “We use high concentrations of pure essential oils that are widely researched for their antibacterial and cleansing properties.” Combined with other natural ingredients such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, Koala Eco’s products are equally or more effective than their toxic counterparts.
Bondi Wash, another homegrown plant-based brand, relies on the antibacterial power of bush oils (Tasmanian pepper, Sydney peppermint, lemon tea tree oil) to power its products. Independent lab testing found the cleansers kill 99.9 per cent of germs. And if you’re looking for a luxe touch, American brand The Laundress uses fragrance notes such as bergamot and ylang ylang, which fill your home with a beautiful, fresh scent while the natural, non-toxic ingredients disinfect.
