Hydration confusion? Our guide to healthy liquids.

“SKIP THE SPORTS DRINKS and smoothies – while the CALORIES ADD UP, you won’t fill up”

DO DAIRY?

There’s a stigma in wellness circles about consuming cow’s milk, but if it agrees with you (and you’ll likely know if it doesn’t), then it’s more than fine to enjoy it in a daily latte or two. “I believe in consuming all food groups in moderation,” says Sepel. “That said, when it comes to dairy, opt for organic where possible and stick to one or two cups a day.” She also selects whole milk over skim as it’s “the wholefood version”, with nutrients and good fats.

If a milk alternative is preferred, Sepel suggests unsweetened almond milk for calcium. “I even add a splash to my soups and baked treats.”

H20, GO!

Needing to sip the recommended two litres per day but in a quandary about whether to tap or not to tap? Filtered tap water is more than fine, says Sepel. “Alkaline water is also great, but there’s no need to fuss over it,” she says. “Hydration is the ultimate goal.”

When it comes to liquid supplement boosters, Sepel gives them a pass, preferring to spike her water with “fresh orange, mint or chia seeds”. Craving a break from H2O? She recommends one fresh green juice a day.

THE FUN STUFF

Many drinks are laden with empty calories, but good options are available. “Kombucha is great for the gut, but I recommend introducing it in small amounts at first. Opt for a brand that’s low in sugar, too,” says Sepel. “Coconut water is good for hydration, but enjoy it moderately as it contains natural sugars.” Skip the sports drinks and smoothies — while the calories add up, you won’t fill up, leading to over-consumption.

And last but not least: alcohol. Watch the sugar by sticking to a few glasses of red or dry white wine (these contain less natural sugar than sweet wines), or clear spirits mixed with soda water. But again, moderation is key. “I try to go alcohol free on weekdays and enjoy one or two glasses of red wine on the weekend,” says Sepel.
