Scandolera pays a visit to impart his knowledge of big time

Euroa Gazette - - SPORTS - EUROA AND DISTRICT BADMINTON ASSOCIATION

THE Euroa and District Badminton Association’s season kicked off early in term two with five teams this year vying for the top spots on the ladder.

Our racy teams have been inspired by great motoring manufacturers and with nearly 40 players in the competition, there has been great competition so far.

Competition is on a Monday night at 7pm and we have a beginners/junior session held at the same time as the main competition which is open to anyone who would like to come and have a hit or learn how to play.

A small fee is charged per night for this.

With seven in each team this year, the top five players play three doubles games and a singles while the others play four games of doubles.

It is fast paced and fun and usually play is finished by 9pm, allowing everyone to get home for a not too late a night at the beginning of the school and working week.

A few weeks ago we had the privilege of having Mike Scandolera come over from Shepparton.

Mike holds an impressive track record being ranked three in the world for the 1982 and 1986 Commonwealth Games team event and number one for the mixed doubles in those same years.

In 1989, Mike was ranked 65 in the world for the men’s singles and 17 in the doubles.

This is the third year now that Mike has made the trip across to give an in-depth coaching session to all players.

With about 40 badminton enthusiasts attending, everyone would have been able to take something away from the night to improve their game. PHOTO: Lyndel Dean From tips on footwork to grip, from playing singles to double, simple exercises to keep your mind and reflexes sharp, Mike’s knowledge and skills in the game come to the fore with his coaching session.

And while, in his words, the reflexes might be a bit slower now, he has not lost any of his enthusiasm for the game and it shows.

While we have just had the mid-year break, the competition kicks off again on Monday, July 4 and there will be hot competition for the final’s placings, coming up in September.
