Watkins ‘family reunion’ in Euroa next month
A WATKINS ‘family reunion’ is being held on October 27 and 28 in Euroa.
Organiser Glenda Paulette (nee Watkins) is calling all descendants that belong to the first John Watkins who bought the “Willows” on October 24, 1854 through the First Land Grants in Victoria.
John Watkins from Ireland established the Watkins family in this area, he being one of the first settlers to purchase a Euroa township allotment soon after Euroa was surveyed in 1850.
He purchased land near “The Willows” on the Seven Creeks in 1854 and his descendants proved to be first rate farmers over the years.
John Watkins farmed the land until 1855 when his son George took over briefly.
Later on it was owned by William Watkins but prior to that it had been out of the family from 1887 until 1990 when John Watkins took the land back on.
It can also be said with certainty that the Watkins family was among the earliest pioneers here and that the whole family have proved to be good citizens.
John Watkins came to Australia in 1850 and landed in Sydney where he married Julia Thompson when he was just 25 years of age.
He died at Geelong in March 1901 at the age of 76 years; he had spent 50 years in Victoria and was buried in Euroa Cemetery,
His wife Julia died at Euroa in 1902 and was also buried in Euroa.
John and Julia Watkins had the following family, Catherine (born 1851), George (born 1853), Mary (born 1856), John (born 1857) and Henry (born 1861).
George’s branch of the family who settled in the Tamleugh area were usually referred to by many Euroa people as the “Tamleugh” Watkins.
A number of the Watkins clan proved very proficient golfers, which included Graeme and Lee Watkins, Jean Hahnel, Lorna Anderson and Ruth Frost.
There will be a meet and greet dinner on Saturday night of October 27 and on Sunday 28 where there will be a lunch with photos and activities for the main reunion.
Glenda asks all those interested or wanting more details to contact her on 0408695481 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
