There are a fair few GSX-R1000 mod­els that fall into the sub-£5k bracket, but we would pick the se­cond gen­er­a­tion. Launched in 2003, the K3/4 is of­ten over­looked and is there­fore tremen­dous value for money at un­der £3000 for a beauty. Still pack­ing the K1’s ag­gres­sive en­gine, the K3 added a bit of re­fine­ment, more power, an up­dated chas­sis and ra­dial brakes to help it stay at the top of the sports­bike tree. Although the RC8 was launched in 2008, de­spite their lower price tag you are bet­ter off avoid­ing the early bikes as not only do they have the smaller 1,148cc en­gine, they also suf­fer a few is­sues. In 2009 the R ar­rived with an 1,195cc V-twin boast­ing enough punch to match the Du­cati 1098 and a rad­i­cal look that is still fresh to this day. An in­ter­est­ing V-twin that han­dles well and comes with lots of nice fea­tures such as ad­justa­bil­ity built into its chas­sis, the RC8 R makes a great road bike with lots of track po­ten­tial. If only it won a few cham­pi­onships...
