BRAKE CALIPER PISTON REMOVER

-

WHAT IS IT?

This tool’s designed to remove stuck or stubborn pistons that aren’t functioning in a caliper.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Most piston removal kits will come with a number of different sized piston inserts, and you’ll want to use the size that is just smaller than the inner diameter of your piston(s). The inserts are slotted down their sides and are designed to expand wider when attached to the shaft of the tool, which flares the insert wider as you turn the shaft downwards. With the piston firmly gripped, and the caliper firmly held within a vice with aluminium jaws (so you don’t mark the surface of the caliper), you’ll use the slide action function of the tool to effectively hammer out the stuck piston. It’s a great tool and a proven way to remove a piston without damaging it or the caliper.

HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?

Like anything, you can pay as much or as little as you like for a tool like this, but we’ve found decent examples for as little as £50 online. That’s a worthy investment as you’ll pay a lot more if you damage the caliper, or destroy a couple of pistons by pulling them out with pliers.
