So, what does it actually mean when you hear someone refer to their new track bike being ‘fully Motec’d’, and are trick electronic­s right for you?

Well, it means they’ve got a fairly decent race bike under their backside and they can calibrate, programme and monitor the workings of every electronic component on that machine, which is great if you know what you’re doing!

There’s a range of kits and brands available for this sort of thing, but I’ve picked Motec for a number of reasons. In the UK it’s a well-known and supported brand; mainly due to the single ECU rule in BSB, which means there’s lots of BSB machines out and about in the club racing and trackday community. BSB championsh­ip organisers introduced the single ECU rule about 10 or so years ago, in order to control the specificat­ion each team is running to and to manage costs, because whether you believe it or not, there’s even more expensive kit available to buy from the likes of Marelli, and from what I understand, these offer even more in terms of functional­ity – like on a World Superbike or MotoGP machine.
