I’m not a little embarrassed, as the Editor of Fast Ford to admit that this is the first ‘performance’ orientated modification I’ve made to my Mondeo. Regular readers will know that I had a brief fling with a tuning handset – which I removed due to it causing clutch slip. I’ve had no reoccurrences since, so I can only deduce that the remap brought the power in too early, and exceeded the limits of the clutch. It’s something other Mk4 TDCi owners have experienced with some maps – so I intend to try again whenever my clutch eventually dies of natural causes. But in the meantime I decided to uprate the intercooler with one of Airtecs fine offerings.
They do a large intercooler for the 2.2 (£369) and a slightly smaller one for the 2.0 (£299), and it’s worth noting that cars fitted with the adaptive cruise control (the one that automatically keeps the distance from the car in front) will need a bit more fiddling to make it fit. All Airtec kits come with full fitting instructions, – and Airtec will fit it for a reasonable £75 – but we’ve done a simple step by step guide to show you how easy it is to fit, and the whole job can be completed in a couple of hours. While carrying out the swap I noticed the air con condenser was leaking – which explains why I’ve had to regas it every year – so that’s another job for the ‘to do’ list.
I’ve also got my hands on a Dash Cam after much searching. It’s a Nextbase 402G, and initial impressions are very favourable. I’ll give you a full update on it next month. Contacts
