MUSTANG MEET

Simply Mustangs and Steeda UK host a driving day.

Well-versed Mustang tuners, Steeda UK, joined forces with Simply Mustangs to co-host an exclusive driving event at North Weald airfield. Club members were given the opportunity to really put their Mustangs to the test, in a safe and legal environment; epic burnouts, high-speed drifting, and basically loads and loads of tyre smoke was definitely the order of the day! And the rumble of V8 thunder filled the air, as owners enjoyed a full day of unadulterated muscle car antics!

As a relatively new Mustang owner myself, the day offered a chance for me to push the car to its limits safe in the knowledge there’s nothing to hit if I get it wrong. And on a gorgeous sunny Spring day I really couldn’t think of a better place to be.

The meet attracts all manner of Mustangs from all over the country, and owners from all walks of life. Fifteen cars attended, including everything from standard examples right through to Motorsport And Performance’s 840bhp (and counting!) supercharged S550 (full feature on this car coming soon!). The owners were equally

as diverse; with newbies like me through to Mustang veterans who have owned the iconic fast Ford for years.

The team at Car Limits were on hand to give expert advice and tuition during the course of the day too. I think for a lot of us it was finally nice to see some dry weather to really get to grips with these cars – rearwheel drive with V8 power and wet weather conditions don’t tend to go hand-in-hand!

The first section of the day was pushing the car from 50 mph up to as fast as you dare go through a high-speed bend. With ample run-off, there was little chance of any accidents happening. Although one owner, Dave Rogerson, was very unlucky and had his gorgeous Velgen wheel ruined when it ran over a rogue item on the strip, the tyre shredded off and the Mustang was performing on three wheels. No one was hurt and Dave was very relaxed and chilled about the incident.

During lunch it was a chance to chat to fellow drivers, and also John and Robbie from the team at Steeda UK. Steeda are wellknown for their Mustang exploits in America (indeed they have won more races with Mustangs than Shelby, Saleen, and Roush combined!) and with the introduction of the Mustang to the UK they are making a big impact over here too. The team are always on hand to answer questions… and their knowledge is invaluable.

After lunch two slalom courses were set up for timed runs; plenty of smoke, noise and action was on show for all to see. Covering the photography as well for the event gave me a chance to chat to a variety of Mustang owners, and the one thing you notice is that they all have a real passion for this car. And with the stallion being fifty-five years old in 2019, and over ten million cars sold, you can see this love affair going on for many more years to come. The UK may have been late to the Mustang party, but with dedicated and enthusiastic owners like those of Simply Mustangs, and with the expert advice and tuning knowledge of companies like Steeda to support them, the Mustang is already on its way to becoming a UK Ford legend too.

Here’s some of the action from the day…
