GT40 TRIBUTES CELEBRATE THE RACERS’ SUCCESS
Perhaps the ultimate playboy’s toy, it’s now possible to buy a precise replica of the most successful competition Ford GT40. Naturally all GT40s are desirable, but arguably more desirable than most is chassis number P/1075, which took the chequered flag at the Le Mans 24-hour for the second time exactly fifty years ago.
To mark this momentous victory, Superformance has teamed up with Safir GT40 and Gulf to create a limited run of tool-room copies and tributes to this iconic race car. These will all come with a correct P/1000-series chassis number and (for some reason) a matching Gulf GT40 guitar. Just fifty will be made, in a two-tier structure: the first offering is the Tribute edition, retailing at £185,000. These have the trademark wide-body and Gulf livery, and are externally indistinguishable from the real thing; underneath they have a choice of Roush-built Ford V8s ranging from 5.0- to 7.0-litres – these are roadgoing cars, and even come complete with air-con. The second tier is the tool-room copy, which weighs in at £280,000. These are exact, perfect replicas of P/1075, both aesthetically and mechanically. They can be specced for track day use, or even with full FIA HTP approval, which makes them eligible for historic racing. Naturally these are machines for those with deep pockets, but given the uniqueness of what they’re emulating, this is a genuine opportunity for professional racers to compete in something that would otherwise be untouchable. Expect to see these pounding around Goodwood and Silverstone in the near future…
