WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

-

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO INSURE?

Less than you might think. Despite being almost uninsurable in the 1990s (due to theft and crashes), RS Cosworths are now true classics, so reasonably-priced limited-mileage policies are available from specialist brokers. Ensure you get agreed-value cover, and don’t be worried if your three-door is modified – because it shouldn’t do too much damage to the premium.

WHERE DO I FIND ONE?

Specialist dealers and collectors’ car auctions are the top places for finding a Sierra Cosworth, from barn finds to concours examples. Some honest cars are still sold privately – check eBay and owners’ groups on Facebook – but do your homework and always view the car with an expert’s assistance.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RUN?

Loads, to be honest. Cosworth ownership is never cheap – not just because fuel economy averages less than 20mpg if you use the loud pedal, but parts cost a fortune, breakdowns are common, and specialist servicing is crucial. Needless to say, they’re worth every penny.

WILL VALUES RISE OR FALL?

That’s a tough one. At the time of writing, values are everrising and may well reach a peak. But don’t expect to see prices falling while petrol is available at the pumps.

SHOULD I MODIFY IT?

Yes. No. Maybe. If you enjoy driving, a Cosworth needs the boost turned up and modern tweaks to remain reliable. But if you prefer to simply polish your investment, remember standard cars fetch most cash.
