BACK INTO THE FORESTS

The Escort Cosworth shows it still has what it takes in the forest stages

For a range of reasons, forest rallying has been the last key branch of UK motorsport to get back on track, but in recent weeks the forests have once more echoed to the sound of rally cars.

The BTRDA Rally Series is the best supported national rally championship and the head of the action is typically dominated by state-of-the-art WRC and R5 rally cars like the current purpose-built Fiestas being built by M-Sport up in the Lake District.

However, Lancastrian Ian Joel is bucking that trend by taking his now venerable Ford Escort Cosworth to some fine results among the newer cars.

“This car was built back in 2001 and had a bare shell rebuild a couple of years ago,” says Joel. “It’s all built to Group A specification. What’s the point of having something you can’t use,” he says of the 300bhp car that he took to seventh overall on the recent Woodpecker Stages, round three of the delayed BTRDA season.
