DESTINY CALLING…

Pogba isn’t the only big name heading to Russia with a specific objective in mind

LIONEL MESSI

The Flea doesn’t strike FFT as much of a Talking Heads fan, but the 2018 World Cup really is the same as it ever was for the Argentina magician. Once more in his lifetime, Leo must try to win football’s ultimate prize and definitively escape the stocky shadow of Diego Maradona. Genuine greatness awaits if the 30-year-old can finally secure the trophy set.

THOMAS MULLER

Germany’s Raumdeuter (Space Invader) is one of three players to score five or more goals in two different World Cups, along with compatriot Miroslav Klose and Peru icon Teofilo Cubillas. If the Bayern Munich forward makes it three in Russia, he’ll already be closing in on Klose’s 16-goal tournament record. He may look a bit clumsy, but the 28-year-old guarantees goals.

JAMES RODRIGUEZ

Four years ago, the Colombian playmaker exploded into elite football by winning the Golden Boot and smashing home the goal of the tournament. After an impressive start to his Real Madrid career, the 26-year-old flattered to deceive, although he has refound form on loan at Bayern. James may have come good at the right time, but he could do with another worldie.

LUIS SUAREZ

It’s pretty simple, Luis – don’t bite anyone. We’re done with all the apologies and excuses. Uruguay should progress from a weak group and, alongside Edinson Cavani, the striker can go deep into the tournament – but only if he isn’t suspended. After the 2010 handball and gnawing on Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder in 2014, Suarez must avoid the unwanted hat-trick.

DIEGO COSTA

The Atletico Madrid frontman once claimed he was “a luxury spectator” when he plays for Spain, and it’s easy to see why. La Roja’s possession obsession can often leave the ex-chelsea striker isolated, but Costa’s fire is key if Julen Lopetegui’s men are to emulate 2010’s vintage and lift the trophy. Time to be the centre-forward Spain need, Diego, if not what they want.
