Gudjohnsen’s greatest games
“MY DAD KISSED ME WHEN I CAME ON FOR HIM, BUT I WAS SO FOCUSED, I’M NOT SURE THAT I ACKNOWLEDGED IT ENOUGH”
Estonia 0 Iceland 3 April 24, 1996 Friendly
“My Iceland debut, coming on as a sub for my father. It had been a story since I was nine, when he gave an interview saying he dreamed of playing with his son for the national team. When I was called up, it was amazing and weird. He kissed me when I came on for him, but I was so focused about running on, I’m not sure that I acknowledged it enough at the time – it was a historic moment.”

April 2, 2000 FA Cup semi-final
“We got so close to reaching the FA Cup final, losing on penalties, but that was probably one of my best ever games for Bolton, and underlined that I was ready to make the step up. Gianluca Vialli told me my performance that day – against a solid Premier League team – made his mind up about signing me for Chelsea.”
Chelsea 3 Liverpool 0
October 1, 2000 Premier League
“My first start for Chelsea in the Premier League and my first goal for the club as well. I had a great game in an all-round great team performance. I set up Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, then scored the third myself. I was only 22 and it was the first time Chelsea fans saw what I could do.”
Celta Vigo 2 Barcelona 3
August 28, 2006 La Liga
“It was my league debut for Barcelona. I was on for 15 minutes and scored the winner, lifting the ball over a defender’s head and volleying it in. The strikers are expected to score at Barça so it’s not like I was given champagne and a cake. But I scored the winning goal on my Barça debut – not many people can say that.”
