Fourfourtwo’s Style List 2019

The game’s best dressed icons, from Beckham to Bellerin

-

GEORGE BEST

So iconic in his ’60s pomp, the press dubbed him ‘the fifth Beatle’. Dated Miss Worlds, owned nightclubs and went to prison. Could play a bit, too.

DIMITAR BERBATOV

The Bulgarian once said of lookalike Andy Garcia, “I’ve studied the way he smokes so I can hold my cigarette the same way.” What else can you say?

JOHAN CRUYFF

The Dutchman said things no one had said before and did things no one had done before. A one-man revolution both on the pitch and in the dugout.

JAY-JAY OKOCHA

‘So good they named him twice’. The Nigerian trickster wowed fans across Europe with a dazzling array of skill, not to mention a winning smile. Lovely.

FERENC PUSKAS

Dubbed ‘the Galloping Major’, the beauty of the former Army man was that he rarely got beyond a canter, so good was his reading of the game.

ZVONIMIR BOBAN

Cruyff led a football revolution, but Boban is credited with kick-starting (literally) a political one by booting an over-officious Belgrade bobby.

RIVELINO

Summed up the effortless brilliance of Brazil’s ’70s side even better than Pele. His languid style, rolled-down socks and porn star tache made him iconic.

GUNTER NETZER

The epitome of West German cool from the mid-60s to mid-70s. He dated an avant-garde artist, ran a hip night club and rarely tackled or tracked back.

LEV YASHIN

The first keeper to dominate his area. The Russian would don an all-black kit to intimidate opposition forwards, with penalty saves his speciality.

ERIC CANTONA

Before he spent his days baffling us with his Instagram posts, he spent his days baffling defenders (and journalists) as the unlikely saviour of English football.

MICHAEL LAUDRUP

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid man was so cool, he was above playing in one of the coolest sides of all time – Denmark’s triumphant Euro 92 team.

SOCRATES

The beard was his trademark, but there was a whole lot more to the Brazilian. A Van Gogh-referencing, Machiavelliquoting, John Lennon-loving one-off.
